If you want to see two of the state’s best high school teams play against each other then you will have a chance Saturday night when three-time defending Class 4A state champion Boyle County hosts Lexington Christian in its bowl game.

The Rebels have one of the state’s best teams again but certainly will be tested by LCA and UK quarterback commit Cutter Boley. The Eagles opened the season with a 56-52 win over Bowling Green at Western Kentucky when the offense rolled up a school record 800 yards.

“Wildest high school game I have ever seen,” said Scott Boley, Cutter’s father.

Boley completed 22 of 34 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns in the win but got the kind of help he did not have in the running game last year from 6-0, 200-pound Brady Hensley, a transfer from Madison Central who ran for over 3,200 yards and 47 touchdowns the previous two seasons.

Hensley ran 30 times for 402 yards — over 13 yards per carry — and five touchdowns. If that wasn’t enough, he caught five passes for 87 yards and two more touchdowns.

“Brady Hensley was a freak last night,” LCA coach Doug Charles said Sunday. “He had 481 all-purpose yards with seven touchdowns. Cutter was special as well.

“One of the craziest and most exciting games I’ve ever seen. So proud of my guys across the board. We averaged 12.6 yards per carry.”

LCA’s total offense was the fourth best total in state history. Cawood had 864 yards against Bell County, Caldwell County had 850 against Calloway County and Henderson County had 821 against Ohio County.

Hensley also became only the 29th player in state history to rush for over 400 yards in a single game.

Bowling Green quarterback Deuce Bailey was also sensational as he completed 31 of 42 passes for 478 yards and four scores with just one interception. However, Bowling Green ran for only 31 total yards and averaged just 1.5 yards per rush.

“While the stats may not show it, there was some really good defense played,” Charles said. “Looking at the numbers, many would think not.

“We gave up three touchdowns (opening kickoff return, a pick 6 and a fumbled scoop and score) to areas that were not defense. We held them to 31 total total yards rushing. Just a few busted plays which led to scores which happens more than teams would like early in the season.

“There were a lot of elite athletes on both teams who are going to make a lot of plays and score a lot of points regardless of who they play. It was an honor to be a part of a classic game where neither team deserved to lose. Very proud of our staff and players for their grit to never blink and overcoming multiple momentum swings to just play the next play. It was indeed a war.”

LCA will see plenty of elite athletes against Boyle. Montavin Quisenberry is the state’s top ranked junior with a number of big-time offers, including Kentucky and Michigan. Quarterback Sage Dawson is an Air Force commit and running back Avery Bodner is a versatile threat who had an 80-yard touchdown run against Bowling Green.
