It was an emotional night for the Trigg County Lady Wildcat volleyball team as they took the floor for the first time since the loss of a former teammate.

The Lady Wildcats fell to Hopkins County Central in three sets Tuesday 25-21, 25-12, 25-11.

Trigg County was scheduled to play Murray Monday night but that match was canceled following the tragic death of former player Lillyan Williams who was killed in a one-car crash Saturday night.

It’s been an emotional few days for the players but Coach Madison Rogers said they have coped as best they can and know that Lillyan would want them to play.

“I want to say that I am so thankful for our community and the support they have shown through this difficult time,” Rogers said. “We have felt the love and support from everyone and ask that you continue to keep our team in your thoughts.”

As for the match Tuesday, Trigg started strong against the Lady Storm before dropping the opening set 25-21.

“Emotions have been high the last few days, but our girls still wanted to play as they felt that was what we needed to do,” Rogers said. “We have a brand new rotation that we haven’t practiced but they pushed through and hustled. They communicated and worked together so well.”

Hopkins County Central (1-2) was able to put some distance between them and Trigg in the final two sets to win their eighth straight match over the Lady Wildcats.

“I think the emotions started to take over and it got into their heads,” Roger said. “Hopkins Central did a great job covering the court and each other on the court.”

Rogers singled out the play of Ashlyn Koch for her play at the net and Keely Broadbent for her passing.

Trigg County returns to the court Thursday against Webster County in the Class 2A Sectional in Dixon. Trigg’s next home match is Monday against Hopkinsville.
