After two consecutive 2nd Region championships and trips to the Sweet 16 quarterfinals, the Lyon County Lyons are no longer anyone’s ‘dark horse’ candidates to contend for a state championship. In fact, by one state-wide poll, the Lyons are now the favorites to cut down the nets at Rupp Arena in March.
The Courier-Journal released its annual preseason basketball poll Monday morning, and Lyon County, led by UK signee Travis Perry are the top-ranked team in the poll, which is voted on by the state’s coaches.
The Lyons had 23 first-place votes. Great Crossing, which had 21 first-place votes came in second.
The rest of the Top 10 are Trinity, Warren Central, Frederick Douglas, Male, Bowling Green, Evangel Christian, Newport, and Covington Catholic.
Lyon County went 31-6 last season, falling to George Rogers Clark 60-56 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
The poll comes out the day after Perry, the state’s all-time leading scorer, announced he would attend the University of Kentucky.
