After three seasons as Webster County boys basketball coach, two winning seasons, and two trips to the 2nd Region tournament, Ryan Haile left the Trojan sideline to return to his home in Henderson County and take an assistant coaching position with the Henderson County Colonels. Stepping into the position is first-year head coach Cory Garrard, who had served as an assistant for Haile over the past three seasons.

Oh, and by the way, Haile did not leave his former aide an empty cupboard and may have just left him the pieces to be one of the darkhorse teams in the 2nd Region.

Webster County is set to return five of its top six scorers from last season. The only graduation loss was Markus Austin, who averaged 7.1 points a game in 2022-2023.

Not only do the Trojans return five of their top six scorers from a year ago, Webster County brings back 10 players who saw action in at least ten games.

When you look at this year’s edition of the team, you start with Deshawn Murphy. Murphy averaged 17.5 points per contest and shot better than 35 percent from behind the 3-point line. He also averaged 6.9 boards a night.

Evan Michalek is another Trojan who can light it up on any given night. Michalek was the team’s second-leading scorer last season at 14 points per game and was the leading threat from behind the 3-point line, knocking down a total of 73 deep shots.

Micah Austin was the third Trojan to average double-digit scoring in 2022-2023. Austin ended up averaging 10.7 points a game and hit 54 threes.

Jarvis Scott Starks is another potent weapon for Webster County. He averaged 7.5 points and 5 rebounds a game.

Luke Garrard. Trace Hardison, Aiden Alstadt, and Reid McDyer also figure to play their parts for a very experienced Trojan team in 2023-2024.

With an experienced team comes a schedule that should have this team primed and ready to go by the end of the season. Trojan opponents, in addition to their 6th District friends at Henderson County and Union County, include South Warren, Calloway County, Hopkinsville, Central Hardin, Lexington Henry Clay, Owensboro, Madisonville, Lyon County, and Marshall County.

The Trojans open the season November 28 on the road at Caldwell County.
