The Henderson County boys’ basketball team returns with a strong nucleus in 2023-24, looking to maintain its stranglehold on the 6th District after collecting a third-straight title a year ago.
The Colonels finished 22-9, including six wins in seven tries to close the regular season. They dispatched Trigg County in the opening round of the 2nd Region tournament before falling to eventual runners-up Hopkinsville 69-60.
Leading scorer and rebounder Gerard Thomas leaves one hole Coach Tyler Smithhart will need to fill. Thomas posted just north of 18 points per game to go with a team-high 8.2 rebounds on the way to All-Region honors. The Colonels will also need to replace the production of Jake Rideout, who chipped in just over eight points and five rebounds per outing.
Smithhart can turn to a pair of juniors to provide the extra scoring punch, including sharpshooter Cooper Davenport. He connected on 69 three-pointers to pace the squad on the way to just over 12 points per game. Lacon McKinney also averaged double figures in scoring while pulling down just short of four rebounds.
Guard Alec Satterfield can also pick up the scoring slack after averages of 6.4 points and 3.3 rebounds as a junior. Junior Dwaine Moss will also help out in the backcourt, along with senior guard Nick Belle.
In the paint, junior Trajdon Davis will look to improve on his three points and four rebounds as a sophomore, and junior Elijah Suggs will be called on to expand his influence down low.
Henderson will host Daviess County on Tuesday to open the regular season. The Colonels have won the last four in the series, including a 31-point blowout last year. A trio of tournaments will close out the year, beginning with the Bosse Winter Classic on December 16. Just three days later, the Colonels will make their way to Lexington Christian for the Central Bank Jim Rose Classic, before hosting the Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC Classic December 28-30.
