
It’s hard for your opponent to win a basketball game when you don’t allow them many made baskets. The Lyon County Lady Lyons came out of the gate to start the 2023-2024 season Tuesday night not being very giving in the early part of the holiday season as they limited Webster County to just two made field goals in the first 11:45 of the game on their way to a 51-32 win over the Lady Trojans in Jason White Gym.
Piper Cotham and Lexi Holland hit two from behind arc in the opening moments of the game to get the Lady Lyons out to an 8-2 lead. The lead would be at 15-7 as the opening quarter ended. Webster County was able to hang that close thanks to their efforts on the glass.
The Lyon County defense continued to clamp down on the Lady Trojans in the second quarter with the trio of Cotham, Holland, and Courtney Collins generating the offense on the other end. The Lady Lyons would lead by as many as 15 points in the second quarter before heading off to the locker room with a 27-13 halftime lead. The lead would likely have been bigger if not for some turnover issues as the Lady Lyons had seven miscues in the half.
The Lady Lyons held Webster County to just four first-half field goals, two in the first quarter and two in the second. On offense, Cotham and Holland combined for 20 points in the half, including four made three-pointers.
Webster County knocked down a couple of threes early in the third quarter to cut the lead to ten at 29-19. However, Lyon County quickly adjusted their defense to limit the deep opportunities for the Lady Trojans for much of the rest of the quarter.
Lyon County responded with an 8-0 run of their own to end the threat and extend the lead to 37-19. During that stretch, the Lady Lyons went 6 of 6 at the free throw line. Still, turnovers were an issue for Lyon County in the second half. The Lady Lyons would have five more in the third but still were able to run the lead out to 43-23 headed into the final quarter.
The two played fairly even over the final eight minutes, with reserves for both teams getting some time on the court in the last part of the final quarter.
Lyon County was paced by Piper Cotham with 18 points. Courtney Collins also hit double figures with 10. While Trinity Taylor scored just five points, she was a force on the glass and on defense in the paint.
Hannah Yates was the only Lady Trojan to reach double-figures with 10. Jaycie Wright and Addison Thompson added six points each.
Lyon County’s defense limited Webster County to just 9 made field goals, only two from inside the 3-point line. The only negative for the Lady Lyons was the turnover bug, which bit them 16 times in the contest. Lyon County did force Webster County into 16 turnovers as well.
The Lady Lyons will get back to action Wednesday night as they take on Graves County in the annual Hoopfest.
