Starting point guard Piper Cotham returned to the lineup and the Lyon County Lady Lyons rebounded from a tough loss Tuesday night. Cotham finished with 16 points and the Lady Lyon defense did the rest as Lyon County rolled past Livingston Central 44-28 in the 5th District opener for both teams in Smithland.
Lyon County’s defensive effort limited the Lady Cardinals to single-digit points in three of the four quarters.
The Lady Lyons took a 9-2 lead after the opening quarter as Piper Cotham scored seven points.
The teams played on even terms in the second quarter as each team scored eight points giving the Lady Lyons a 17-10 lead at the break.
Livingston Central continued to stand their ground as the second half got started. Victoria Joiner scored six in the quarter as the Lady Cardinals continued to hang around, trailing 30-23 going into the final quarter.
The defense then locked down for Lyon County in the final quarter and Piper Cotham and Trinity Taylor took over on the other end of the floor as the Lady Lyons pulled out to the 16-point win.
Cotham hit for 16 points for the Lady Lyons. Trinity Taylor scored 9, seven of them coming in the final quarter. Lexi Holland added 7.
For Livingston Central, Victoria Joiner had seven points. Maggie Downey added six.
Lyon County (3-1) goes to Columbia, Missouri Saturday morning where they will take on Strafford High School.
