Caldwell Clips Trigg 62-51 in Return to Butler Gym

Caldwell County and Jaydarius Wilson continued their strong start to the 2023-24 season in a trip to Butler Gym in downtown Princeton.

Wilson put up 23 points and 23 rebounds Tuesday night as the Tigers turned away Trigg County 62-51 in Caldwell’s walk down memory lane in the rare date in its old facility.

Wilson is averaging 21.3 points and 17 rebounds a game for the Tigers, who have won three straight since a season-opening overtime setback to Webster County.

Demaurius Thompson had 17 points for Caldwell, which had dropped four its last five meetings with the Wildcats.

Trigg, now 0-3, got 13 points and 16 rebounds from Jhaden Vaughn, but could not come back after falling behind by double digits in the first half.

There were five lead changes early before Caldwell went up 13-8 after one quarter.

The Tiger margin reached double figures when Wilson completed a three-point play at the 4:44 mark to make it 20-10.

Caldwell took a 30-20 advantage to halftime, and continued to keep the difference in the 8-11 point range throughout the third quarter.

The Tigers took a 44-34 to the final period, but had to fend off a late comeback bid by Trigg.

Down 54-44 with 2:30 minutes to go, the Wildcats crept within 56-51 following a steal by Landon Stewart and basket by Joshaun Bridges with 50 seconds to play.

But Thompson hit two free throws at the other end 9 seconds later, and Caldwell eventually pushed the final margin out to 11 points.

Davaree Gude added 10 points for Trigg, which next visits Crittenden County on Friday for 5th District action.

The Wildcats shot 60 percent on their 2-point shots in the contest (21 of 35) but connected on just one of 21 attempts from 3-point range.

Caldwell was 26 of 62 overall from the floor (41.9 percent) with Wilson going 10 for 20.

Caldwell takes its three-game win streak to Hopkinsville on Thursday.
