Lady Wildcats Drop Two at Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic

A drought of nearly 18 minutes without a field goal spelled doom for the Trigg County Lady Wildcats in a 47-23 loss in the final game of the Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic on Friday.

The defensive effort was a welcome sight for Coach Greg Stephens after Trigg gave up 60 points or more in three of its previous five games.

However, Trigg County failed to hit 32 points for a seventh consecutive game.

“We went in and we restructured our offense this month. We took out the old, put the new in, and spent two weeks running it,” Stephens said. “That was part of what we were really frustrated with in the first game is we weren’t even running it. When we did run it, we were getting what we wanted.”

While the offense continues to go through growing pains and Stephens tries to find a reliable rotation, he’s confident the scoring total will increase after the calendar flips to 2024.

“I’m looking for us to start picking up better on offense and hopefully we’re getting to the rim a little bit more.”

One bright spot for the Lady Wildcats has been its recent free throw shooting. Entering the week shooting just 35% at the line, Trigg was 13 of 23 against Mayfield and 10 of 16 in a loss to Hopkins County Central earlier in the day.

However, the field goal drought was too much to overcome.

The Lady Wildcats trailed 13-8 after one quarter and saw the deficit grow to 34-14 before AJ Navarro ended the drought with a bucket at the 6:17 mark of the fourth quarter.

The eighth grader led the Lady Wildcats with 11 points and eight rebounds. Veyda Grinols added four points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Mayfield got 24 points from Skylar Mandry and 13 from Lay Mayes, the daughter of former Trigg County All-State guard Anthony Mayes.

Trigg County fell to 0-4 all-time against Mayfield. The Lady Wildcats will play St. Mary in the fifth place game Saturday morning at 11:00. It will be the first matchup between the schools in four years.
