
The Franklin-Simpson Lady Wildcats had 11 players get in the scorebook and ran their record to 13-0 with a 67-40 victory over Todd County Central on Friday in Elkton. The Lady Rebels saw a five-game winning run come to an end and slipped to 0-1 in 13th-District play.
Looking to halt a seven-game losing streak in the series, Abby Williams got the Lady Rebels off to a quick start with four of the first five points of the game before exiting with an injury. Franklin-Simpson took advantage with a 10-0 run to lead 11-4 before Todd’s Jordyn Shemwell knocked down a three-pointer to halt the Lady Wildcats’ momentum. However, Franklin scored the last five points of the frame and led 16-7 after a three by Naja Nolan in the final seconds.
A 7-2 spurt to start the second stretched the margin to 14, and the lead was 35-16 when the teams went to the locker room at halftime. LaReesha Cawthorn scored eight points in the quarter to lead the Lady Wildcats on the way to a team-high 17 for the game.
Lyniah Brown posted eight points in the third quarter to join Cawthorn in double figures with 12 for Franklin-Simpson. Kloie Smith added five in the third to finish with 11.
8th-grader Jordyn Shemwell carried the scoring load in the second half for the Lady Rebels with 14 points to finish with a game-high 20. Alexis Taylor entered the contest leading Todd Central with over 20 points per game, but a steady procession of Lady Wildcats in the paint held her to 13.
Todd Central slipped to 11-4 ahead of a 4th Region All ‘A’ matchup with Cumberland County on Monday. The Lady Rebels fell to eventual champions Monroe County in the semifinals of last season’s tournament.
