Lady Maroons Run Down Lyon County at the Wire in 68-64 Win

After seeing the Lyon County Lady Lyons come from behind in the second half to take the lead, the Madisonville-North Hopkins Lady Maroons returned the favor at the time it mattered the most Tuesday night. The Lady Maroons finished the final 3:05 of the game on an 11-1 run as they took a 68-64 win in Jason White Gym.

The Lady Maroons trailed 63-57 with just under 4 minutes to go after a Lexi Holland 3-pointer. But that would be the last field goal of the night for the Lady Lyon as they suffered some untimely miscues in terms of ball security, rushed a couple of shots late, and missed three free throws in the final 2 1/2 minutes of the game.

Riley Sword drained a three with 3:05 left to cut the lead to 63-60. Destiny Whitsell cut the lead to 63-62 with 2:10 left. SaNya Carney buried one from behind the arc with 1:20 left to put the Lady Maroons back into the lead at 65-63. After a Trinity Taylor free throw, Carney added a basket with :30 seconds left down in the lane to make it 67-64. Riley Sword would seal the win by making one of two free throws with 2.2 seconds left.

For most of the night it had been the Lady Lyons fighting the uphill battle to get back in the game. The Lady Lyons fell behind by as many as five points in the opening quarter on multiple occasions as they trailed 19-14 after one.

The Lady Maroon lead grew to as many as ten points in the second quarter, the last time coming at 32-22. Led by the efforts of Lilly Perry, Lyon County scored the final 8 points of the half to make it 32-30 at the half.

Madisonville would lead by as many as seven in the third before the Lady Lyons made their big push to get to the lead. With Piper Cotham driving the train, the Lady Lyons finished the quarter by scoring the final 8 points to make it 55-51 going into the final eight minutes. Cotham scored 11 points in the quarter for the Lady Lyons.

The comeback effort gave Madisonville its 4th straight win over Lyon County.

Piper Cotham led four Lyon County players in double figures with 21. Trinity Taylor, Lexi Holland, and Courtney Collins, all had 12 points for the night.

Madisonville also had four players in double figures. Riley Sword finished with 18 points, including five 3-pointers. Destiny Whitsell and SaNya Carney added 13 each. Kailley Barber chipped in with 12 on four 3-pointers.

With the loss, Lyon County drops to 12-7 with the loss. The Lady Lyons are back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Mayfield.
