Another chapter has been written in the story of what will be the legendary high school career of Travis Perry. The Lexington Herald-Leader announced Tuesday morning that the Lyon County standout has been selected as their 2023 Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year.

The award is voted on annually by sports media members, active and retired, across the state of Kentucky.

The announcement comes just days after Perry, who set the boys’ all-time basketball scoring record last year at the Sweet 16, hit the 5,000-point career scoring mark during the Lyons’ All A Classic loss to Newport in the tournament semifinals.

According to the Herald-Leader, Perry is just the third high school athlete to win the award, joining basketball standout Richie Farmer, who played at Clay County and the University of Kentucky, and football great Tim Couch, who played at Leslie County and then went on to UK and the Cleveland Browns.

Current UK player Reed Shepherd, who played last season at North Laurel, finished second in the voting.
