When the Todd County Central girls basketball team fell 55-53 at Logan County in mid-January, the Lady Rebels did so without the services of second-leading scorer Abby Williams. With Williams back in the lineup for the rematch on Friday, she made her presence felt with four three-pointers on the way to a game-high 17 points to lead the Lady Rebels to a 52-39 victory.
However, early on in front of a packed house in Elkton, it looked like Todd Central might be headed for a second loss to the Lady Cougars. Logan jumped out to a 4-0 lead and was in front 11-4 after a three-point play by Kyla Bilyeu. The Lady Rebels went four and a half scoreless minutes before JaMya Kay’s layup with thirty seconds left in the first quarter to cut the margin to six.
An Alexis Taylor bucket in the paint and a three-pointer by Jordyn Shemwell pulled Todd Central to within three points at 17-14, and Williams’s second triple of the second quarter trimmed the margin to a point. As she did in the first quarter, Kay closed the second with a layup to give the Lady Rebels their first lead of the night at 23-22.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Taylor and Williams to start the second half gave Todd Central a seven-point cushion and forced a Logan County timeout. Williams scored 11 in the frame, including a three-point play and a three on consecutive possessions, and closed the quarter with a pair of free throws for a 41-33 score.
Taylor closed the show with five points in the fourth, and her layup with 6:25 left gave the Lady Rebels their first double-digit lead. The points dried up for the Lady Cougars, with Reese Wetton scoring four of their six over the final eight minutes.
The Lady Rebels snapped a three-game skid to improve to 13-9, 2-3 in district play. They will see the Lady Cougars again for a third time when they meet in the opening round of the 13th District tournament, with the Lady Rebels hoping to avenge a season-ending defeat a year ago.
