Colonel Wrestlers Finish Sixth at Region

Christian County finished in sixth place at the Region I Wrestling Tournament at Calloway County on Saturday and will send four wrestlers to the state tournament.

Kevondre Young won his first two matches to advance to the championship in the 120-pound match where he fell to Union County’s Utah Heady by a first-round pin.

Dane Miller finished in third place in the 132-pound class. He won two matches before falling to McCracken County’s Camryn Freiiberg by a 7-3 decision in the semifinals. He scored a 14-4 major decision over Paducah Tilghman’s Jaylin Bellamy in the third-place match.

Haydon Merrick punched his ticket to the state tournament with a fourth-place finish in the 138-pound class. Merrick lost a close 5-4 decision to Union County’s Luke Thomas in the semifinals to drop to the consolation bracket where he fell to Paducah Tilghman’s Ethan O’Malley in the third-place match by another 5-4 decision.

Xaveiyon Reid brought home a fourth place finish in the 285-pound class. In the third-place match, Reid was pinned by Henderson County’s Latravion Johnson in the second round and was injured. He was able to leave the mat under his own power and his status for the state tourney is to be determined.

Reid joins Merrick, Miller, and Young as automatic qualifiers for the state tournament on Thursday and Friday at Alltech Arena in Lexington.

Anthony Velasco finished in fifth place with a 2-2 day. He defeated Fort Campbell’s Andy Cintron by a 10-2 major decision in his final match and will be an alternate at the state tournament in the 113-pound class.

Zach Eads also produced a fifth-place finish, going 3-2 in the 157-pound class. He defeated Henderson County’s Brock Crook 6-4 in the fifth-place match and will also be an alternate at the state tourney.

Tay Martinez finished in sixth place in the 144-pound class with a 1-3 day on the mat.

Isaiah Davidson took to the mat six times and went 3-3 in the 175-pound class to produce a sixth-place finish.

Also finishing in sixth place was Xaveir Reid in the 215-pound class.

Paul Abren was 2-2 and didn’t place, falling to Fort Campbell’s Jeffery Perry in the third consolation round.

Christian Robinson also went 2-2 in the 190-pound class and didn’t place.

As a team, Christian County totaled 121.5 points to finish 19.5 points ahead of seventh-place Fort Campbell and 5.5 points behind fifth-place McCracken County.

Union County won the region title with 306 points with Paducah Tilghman finishing in second place with 269 points.
