Top-seeded Madisonville-North Hopkins used a big second half to claim the girls’ 7th District championship Thursday night.

Trailing Hopkins County Central 25-16 at halftime, the Lady Maroons outscored the Lady Storm 34-6 in the second half to turn a nine-point deficit into a 19-point victory.

Destiny Whitsell had 15 points and Riley Sword had 12 for Madisonville, which has now won four of the last six district titles.

Tyah White had 13 to pace Hopkins Central, the No. 2 seed, which had won two of the last three championships.

The Lady Storm (18-14) seemingly had momentum going to the locker room at the break, using an 18-7 advantage in the second period to build its nine-point edge.

However, Madisonville (16-12) picked up the defensive intensity in the second half — and Hopkins Central struggled offensively over the final two quarters.

The Lady Storm connected on just two field goals over the final 16 minutes.

Madisonville won all three matchups between the two teams this season.

Both the Lady Maroons and the Lady Storm will play in the 2nd Region tournament next week at Trigg County.
