The opportunity to coach at his alma mater was too much for Mason Burgett to pass up.

After two seasons as Trigg County boys’ basketball coach, Burgett announced on Monday he was leaving the Wildcats to become the head coach at Hopkins County Central.

Burgett will replace Michael Fraliex, who stepped down as Hopkins County Central coach earlier this month after a five-season record of 51-79.

Burgett was a starting guard for the Storm, scoring 12 points a game during his senior season in 2016-17. He played for his father Chad Burgett, who won the school’s only region title as a coach in 2000.

After serving as an assistant coach for his father Chad Burgett at Trigg County, he was elevated to head coach prior to the 2022-23 season.

Burgett was 27-37 as Wildcat skipper. Trigg County was the district runner-up and lost to Henderson County in the first round of the region tournament in both years. Before 2023, Trigg County had not made the region tournament since 2016.

The 2023-24 Wildcats were 12-20, the first 20-loss campaign for the program since 1993.

Burgett said is proud of where the program currently stands.

Trigg County graduates three of its top four scorers but has some talented guards slated to return along with a strong middle school program.

Hopkins County Central was 10-18 last season and graduates four seniors. However, Burgett feels its a program on the rise.

“Mason has left the program in good shape. After an absence from the region tournament, he has taken the program to back-to-back region appearances,” said TCHS principal Tim Bush. “We appreciate the work that he has put into our program and wish him the best moving forward.”

Bush said the search for a new coach would begin immediately.
