It was a brutally tough way for the Hopkinsville Tigers to see a two-game winning streak come to an end. Logan County scored three runs in the top of the 13th inning and then held off the Tigers in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 4-2 win Friday night.
Hopkinsville trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the 13th but made the Cougars sweat it out at the end.
Zach Moss led off the inning with a walk. After a fly-out, Gavin Powell singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Andrew Mayes then flew out to left for the second out of the inning. A Logan County error allowed Zach Moss to score and cut the lead to 4-2. Chase Fort was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, putting the tying run on second and the winning run on first.
But the rally would end there. Gavin Mitchell popped up to first to end the game with the Cougars sneaking away with the two-run win.
Logan County had taken advantage of two walks and a hit batter to get to the lead in the top of the 13th. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double from Noah Mosely.
The game had been a pitchers’ duel most of the night with Logan County scoring a run in the top of the first and the Tigers coming back to tie it with a run in the bottom of the 6th. J.J. Thompson doubled to lead off the 6th, moved to third on a fielder’s choice, and then scored on a squeeze play to draw the Tigers even at 1-1.
Both teams were limited to three hits in the game. For Hopkinsville, J.J. Thompson, Gavin Powell, and Lucas Kaetzel had one hit each.
Gavin Powell was tagged with the loss, working one inning in relief. Four Hopkinsville pitchers combined to rack up 19 strikeouts in the game.
Logan County’s Jacob Regan went 4 1/3 innings in relief to get the win.
