It’s not every day you get to knock off the defending state champion.
The Lyon County Lyons did that on Monday, upending Whitley County 6-1 in baseball action in Bowling Green.
Eli Baker threw a complete-game five-hitter as Lyon won for the sixth-straight time after starting the season 0-4.
Baker struck out three and walked just one while allowing just one unearned run against Whitley, which went 39-4 a year ago while winning the KHSAA state championship.
Brady Belt finished 3-for-4 at the plate and scored twice for Lyon, which scored single runs in each of the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead.
A three-run seventh gave the Lyons some breathing room before Whitley — 7-6 this season — broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh.
Korben Lucas went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for Lyon. Peyton Williams was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI as part of Lyon’s nine-hit attack.
The Lyons beat Whitley 4-2 in the first round of the state tournament in 2021 on Lyon’s run to the state semifinals.
Lyon will play in Bowling Green on Tuesday against Murray at 4:00.
