The Christian County baseball team was an inning and a half away from ending a seven-game skid on Thursday, but a pair of late runs pushed Mount Juliet, TN to a 6-5 victory at the Donny Everett Classic at Clarksville High School.
A Colonel run on an error broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the sixth inning, but the Golden Bears answered with two runs in their half of the fame to drop the Colonels to 4-11 ahead of a matchup with Montgomery Central, TN on Friday.
Leading by a run in the bottom of the third, Mount Juliet doubled its advantage on an RBI single by Hayden Finney. But the Colonels surged in front with four runs in the top of the fourth, beginning with a two-out, three-run triple by Carter Sholar. Sholar then came home on a passed ball to give Christian County a two-run cushion.
Runs on a sacrifice fly and a passed ball pulled Mount Juliet even in the bottom of the fourth, and despite a double by the Colonels’ Blake Boehman, neither team could push a run across in the fifth inning.
With runners on second and third after a pair of walks and a stolen base, Christian County scored the go-ahead run on a Golden Bear error, but the inning ended with a Colonel runner caught trying to steal third.
Aiden Lewis went five and two-thirds innings on the mound for the Colonels, including a pair of strikeouts to start the bottom of the sixth. However, a hit-by-pitch put a runner on, and the tying run came home on a single by Ryan Worden. Roman Petricca followed with an RBI single to put the Golden Bears back on top, and Sebastian Dazey relieved Lewis to get the final out.
The Colonels went down in order in their final at-bat to slip to an eighth-straight defeat. Lewis suffered the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Four Colonels had a hit each, with Lewis drawing three walks, and Sholar driving in three runs.
Noah Ilias had two hits for the Golden Bears, Finney, Worden, and Luke McQueary each drove in a run, and Petricca finished with two RBI.
