The Hopkinsville Tigers got only one hit Thursday evening in the 4th inning of their game against Choctawhatchee but it was a doozy. J.J. Thompson’s grand slam capped off a 13-run inning that carried the Hopkinsville Tigers to a 14-10 win over the Indians, the Tigers 4th straight win on their Florida trip.

The Tigers were trailing 2-1 as the game entered the top of the 4th and then the game came undone for Choctawhatchee. The Indians pitching staff gave up nine walks and two hit batters, while the defense committed two errors as Hopkinsville scored nine runs. The last four runs of the big inning came when J.J. Thompson took one over the right field fence with the bases packed.

Hopkinsville then had to hold off the Indians as Choctawhatchee scored 8 runs over the final four at-bats but it was not enough to overcome the Tigers’ big inning.

The Tigers overcame eight walks and a couple of fielding miscues to hang on for the win. Hopkinsville was outhit by the Indians 7 to 5 but did more with the opportunities they had.

A monster night for J.J. Thompson, who went 2-4 with the grand slam and 5 RBIs. Gavin Powell ended the game 1-5 with a double and 3 RBIs for the Tigers.

Andrew Mayes started on the mound for the Tigers and picked up the win. He went 5 innings, giving up 5 runs, just two of them earned, on three hits, striking out four and walking seven.

Hopkinsville looks to complete a perfect Florida swing Friday morning as the Tigers will take on Todd County Central.
