Three of the four semifinalists have been determined after the first day of the girls’ Second Region Tennis Tournament at Hopkinsville’s Ruff Park on Wednesday.
Top seed Kiley Demoss and Caroline Lovvorn of Madisonville breezed into the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hopkinsville’s Chiani Leak and Aphasia King and a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kimberly Shelton and Brookelyn Whitledge of Webster County.
Demoss, last year’s singles winner at region, is trying to become the first player since Caldwell County’s Belle Englebright in 2016-17 to follow up a Second Region doubles championship with a singles title.
They will play four-seed Cameron Chandler and Merrick Conkrite of Henderson County in the semifinals. They defeated Lyon County’s Lexi Holland and Jackie Hall 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and Hopkins County Central’s Addison Rickard and Emma Kilough 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Three-seed Callie Mackey and Avery Adams of Hopkins County Central moved into the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Emily Davis and Ashton Grace of University Heights Academy and later a 6-0, 6-0 win over Union County’s Addison Tamayo and Abigail Dreisbach.
Madisonville’s Albany Ray and Emma Tagg pulled off the upset of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over two-seed Keegan Miller and Ella Johnson of Caldwell County.
They will play Lyon County’s Allie Holt and Bailey Breitrick in a noon quarterfinal match with a state tourney berth on the line.
