The top four seeds have moved into the semifinal round of the girls’ Second Region Tennis Tournament being played this week at Hopkinsville’s Ruff Park.

Lyon County’s Anna Crawford won her first match on Wednesday 6-1, 6-0 over Hopkins County Central’s Elissa Adams. She then posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Madisonville’s Addyson Raymer in the quarterfinals and will make a return trip to the state tournament by virtue of her advancement to the semifinals.

Crawford, the tourney’s No. 2 seed, will play three-seed Jaylee Duncan of Henderson County in the semifinals. Duncan defeated Union County’s Allison Diebler 6-0, 6-0 and then handed University Heights Academy’s Sarah Peebles a 6-1, 6-1 defeat.

Peebles, a senior playing her first year of tennis, came into the tournament as the 11 seed but upset Webster County’s Josie Cardwell 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-1) in the first round.

Hopkinsville’s Madison Allen, the seven seed, lost her opening match to Madisonville’s Raymer 7-5, 6-3. Raymer was the 10 seed who lost to Crawford in the quarterfinals.

In the upper bracket, Webster County’s Sara Welshans, the top seed, and four seed Macey Browning of Madisonville moved into the semifinals and secured a berth in the state tournament.

Welshans, last year’s region runner-up, defeated Caldwell County’s Josie Shaffer 6-0, 6-0 and Hopkinsville’s Lainey Stewart 6-0, 6-3.

Browning defeated Lyon County’s Josie Kaminski 6-2, 6-1 and Hopkins County Central’s Gracie Patterson 6-0, 6-2.

After Caldwell County’s Belle Englebright won three straight region titles from 2017-19, this year’s winner will be the fourth different winner in four years.

Play will resume Thursday morning at 11:00 at Ruff Park.
