The Hopkinsville baseball team built some momentum heading into the postseason with a 4-1 victory over Calloway County on Thursday, improving to 18-8 ahead of a third matchup with Christian County in the upcoming 8th-District tournament.
A run on a Tiger error helped Calloway break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, but it was all Hoptown at the plate the rest of the way. The Tigers answered with three runs in the top of the sixth, including an RBI bunt single by Lucas Kaetzel.
Gavin Powell’s sacrifice fly pushed the fourth run across in the Tigers’ final at-bat, and Andrew Mayes pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning to cap two innings of work and earn a save.
Gavin Mitchell picked up the win on the mound, allowing a single earned run on three hits with a strikeout over two innings. Mayes held the Lakers scoreless on a hit with a walk and a strikeout.
Zach Moss led the Tigers with two hits, including a double to lead off the seventh, and JJ Thompson, Dylan Sweeney, Powell, Mitchell, and Kaetzel each had a hit.
