Hoptown Girls Claim Region Runner-Up Title

The Hopkinsville girls’ track and field team had a pair of athletes qualify for the state meet in addition to a relay team.

This was part of a balanced day that saw the Lady Tigers take second place at the Class 2A Region1  Meet Saturday in Paducah.

Hopkinsville scored 73 points to finish nine points ahead of third-place Logan County. Calloway County ran away with the region title with 233.5 points.

Hoptown’s Grace Cansler overtook Calloway County’s Brooklyn Smith in the final 80 meters to win the 400-meter dash in 1:03.18. She was also ninth in the 200-meter dash in 31.01 seconds.

Anarria Settles won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.19 seconds.

Several others will play a wait-and-see game to see if they gain at large bids based on their time or distance on Saturday. First and second-place finishers at the region automatically qualify for the state meet on June 1 in Lexington.

Eighth-grader Kaniya Jackson Grundy was third in the 100-meter dash in 18.78 seconds.

Alexis Herrera Loveto was fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:47.56. She was the only runner in the race to run a faster second lap than the first.

Kaydon Coats was fourth in the 1600-meter run in 6:35.67.

Lauren Mayes was fourth in the 3200-meter run in 14:01.23.

Janiyah Rhodes was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 14.02 seconds and seventh in the 200-meter dash in 30.42 seconds.

Rebecca Wood was seventh in the 1600-meter run in 7:05.03.

Ollia Dixon was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in 56.81 seconds.

Arniya Brown was eighth in the 100-meter dash in 14.14 seconds.

RELAYS

The 1600-meter relay team of Anarria Settles, Grace Cansler, Amaya Burse, and Ollia Dixon came in second place in 4:33.83.

The 800-meter relay team of Ollia Dixon, Arniya Brown, Janiyah Rhodes, and Grace Cansler was third in 1:53.45.

Also taking third place was the 3200-meter relay team of Rebecca Wood, Kaydon Coats, Alexis Herrera Loveto, and Lauren Mayes in 11:03.61.

The 400-meter relay team of Kaniya Jackson Grundy, Ollia Dixon, Arniya Brown, and Janiyah Rhodes came in fourth place in 54.32 seconds.

FIELD EVENTS

ZaKerah Henderson was fifth in the discus throw at 76-09 and fifth in the shot put at 26-01.50.

Jakaylah Pettus was ninth in the discus throw at 60 feet and ninth in the shot put at 21-10.50.
