On the same night that his baseball team saw its season come to an end, one 2nd Region coach decided to step down from his position. After the Fort Campbell Falcons fell to the UHA Blazers in the 8th District semifinals Monday night, Alberto Gonzalez notified YourSportsEdge.Com that he was leaving as the Falcons’ head baseball coach after six seasons on the job. One of those seasons was the lost year of the pandemic in 2020.

Gonzalez team this season won nine games, the most since 2012, when a team coached by Kenny Caver went 16-19. The Falcons also picked up the first postseason win for the program in 25 years when they knocked off Heritage Christian Academy last Saturday in the opening round of the 8th District tournment.

As for the reasons for stepping away, Gonzalez pointed to a new position with DoDEA and attempting to rebuild his home, which was destroyed in the December 9 tornado.

Gonzalez said “Baseball is my number one sport and I will continue to support the Falcons baseball team.”

In a statement, the coach went on to thank his team for a great season and the memories that this team created. He added “I wish you all the best. I will still support you. I will be there when the new fields open.”

Fort Campbell did not play a home game this season as the facilities on post are being completely redone. There is the possibility that the 2025 season could be another road season for the Falcons if the project is not finished by next spring.
