Isaac “Spike” Sowells Jr. is the highest rated offensive lineman in Kentucky in the 2025 recruiting class and spent the weekend on an official visit to UK, one of his final five schools.

Isaac Sowells Sr. was on WLAP Sunday Morning Sports Talk and said his family always “appreciated” UK recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow.

“He’s always had great communication with Spike from the beginning,” said Sowells Sr.

However, Sowells Sr., a three-year offensive line starter at Indiana who went on to play in the NFL, made it clear that UK offensive line coach Eric Wolford has also become a big factor since returning to Kentucky in January after spending two seasons at Alabama.

“A former position coach did not value Spike as much as we like. Wolford being here definitely helps the situation,” the Louisville Male offensive lineman’s father said.

“I have friends in the coaching profession and I have not heard one thing bad about coach Wolford. Everybody says he is one of the best coaches in college football. That is huge to me. As much as they (college coaches) do homework on my son, I do homework on them as well.”

Spike Sowells is not the only offensive lineman that Wolford is impressing because 6-7, 300-pound Darrin Strey of Paw Paw, Mich., verbally committed to UK Sunday. HIs offer list included Arkansas, Cincinnati, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisville, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ole Miss, Oregon, Purdue, Rutgers, Stanford, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Wisconsin along with others.

“First and foremost I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for this opportunity in life and for guiding me through this journey,” Strey posted on social media. ”After lots of thinking and praying, I have decided to commit to the University of Kentucky to be a part of the Big Blue Wall.”

Strey made an official visit to UK over the weekend and Wolford was his primary recruiter. He was scheduled to visit Wisconsin and Stanford later this month.

247Sports rates him as the nation’s No. 36 offensive tackle.

  1. Spike would seal the deal on the offensive line in this recruiting class. You always save the best for last. Then we can get a couple more offensive lineman in the transfer portal to fill the class out. We will be losing 3 or 4 offensive lineman after this year.
