The Fulton Railroaders celebrated America’s birthday with a solid team pitching effort and an Ohio Valley League win over the Hoptown Hoppers Thursday night. The Railroaders jumped out to a first-inning lead and rolled on to a 6-1 win on their home field.
The holiday fireworks started early for the home team. Garner Anderson led off the bottom of the first with a single. Anderson then stole second and third before scoring on a dropped third strike to Carson Cochran.
After a pair of walks, Cole Sims launched one over the centerfield fence to give the Railroaders a 4-0 lead after one inning.
The Hoppers got one of those runs back in the top of the second. Hadley Smith led off the inning with a single. Smith advanced to second on a passed ball and then moved over to third on a ground out. He scored on a single to left off the bat of Max Martin to trim the lead to 4-1.
From that point, pitching took over until the bottom of the 6th. Between the bottom of the 2nd and the bottom of the 6th, the two teams combined for only three hits.
Fulton added a run in the bottom of the 6th on a walk, a double, and an RBI single from Garner Anderson, as the lead moved back out to 5-1. The Railroaders tacked on another run in the bottom of the 7th on an RBI double from Alegrando Quilles to make it 6-1.
Fulton pitching limited the Hoppers to just four hits on the night.
Max Martin ended the night 2-3 with an RBI for Hoptown. Hadley Smith and Jacob Bly added one hit each for the Hoppers.
Hoptown falls to 11-15 with the loss, while Fulton improves to 8-18 with the win and cuts the Hoppers’ lead for 4th place in the league down to three games.
