Former Mason County and University of Kentucky standout Darius Miller never thought about playing for La Familia, UK’s alumni team participating in The Basketball Tournament in Rupp Arena starting with Friday night’s game.

However, he is participating as an assistant on Tyler Ulis’ coaching staff.

“I just wanted to come back and help in whatever way that I could and see some friends and family. I’m just trying to be a resource, that’s all,” said Miller Monday.

“It’s already fun for me just to see. I haven’t seen some of these guys in a while. Just  seeing some friends that I haven’t seen for years is more than enough reason for me to be helping.”

Miller won a state championship and Mr. Basketball honors at Mason County in 2008. Four years later he was on Kentucky’s national championship team.

Currently he’s living in Lexington and pursuing various business opportunities and investments along with a “little bit” of real estate.

“Most of the time I just spend time with my family,” Miller, who played 271 games in six NBA seasons, said. “I am married and have two daughters. I am just trying to be present in everything for them. We moved back here about two years ago.”

Miller is trying to help Ulis take the former UK players who have not played together as a team and get them in a team mode by Friday.

‘They’re just building that chemistry in such a short amount of time, you know? We got our first game on Friday,” Miller said. “So just getting the guys together and we’re trying to put on the best show we can.”

  1. Darius Miller – the only player in history who accomplished all 3…

    Mason County High
    *KY HS Mr Basketball
    *KY HS State Champ

    Kentucky WildCats
    *UK National Champ

His jersey should hang in Rupp Arena specifying these 3

  2. This is the type of national news which is needed to influence men to be responsible and have taking care of their family as a high priority.

Congrats to our former Mason County & UK star for being a genuine role model

    Nice article, Larry!

  3. Darius Miller was the glue of the 2012 national championship. Take him off that team and we don’t win it. Much respect and thankful for all those great games he played in. 1,000 point scorer 4 year guy.

  4. Pope is talking to a 7’2" , 290, kid in New Zealand who might reclassify to 2024. He wants to play college ball in America for a team that plays through their big man. I watched a UTube video and this kid is polished. He can score in traffic at the rim, has a nice mid range shot, and hits a decent clip from 3. He is also a willing and capable passer when he gets double and triple teamed. He runs the floor better than you would think too. He would be the perfect guy to fill out this years roster, but would be a great signing for 2025 too.
