Senior Luke Parker moves to receiver this season.
It may have been just a scrimmage, but any win is a good win when you went 1-10 the year before.
Daelyn Lander threw three touchdown passes as Caldwell County edged Owensboro Apollo 20-14 in the varsity portion of Thursday’s preseason contest at Tiger Stadium in Princeton.
That should give the Tigers some momentum heading into their regular season opener next week, at home, against Hopkins County Central.
Caldwell hit some big plays to score touchdowns in the scrimmage.
The Tigers’ first score came on a deep pass from Lander to Luke Parker. Parker went up over an Apollo defender to tip the ball up to himself. He then caught the ball behind the defense and raced the final 30 yards to the end zone to complete a 70-yard scoring connection.
Early in the second quarter, Lander hit Luke Maddox with a short pass. Maddox found room on the right side of the field and sprinted all the way down the sideline for another 70-yard score.
Gus Fox later hauled in a TD pass as the Tigers earned the scrimmage win against the Class 5A school.
In junior varsity action, Apollo scored once before lightning brought an early end to the competition.
