Macy Cotton was resigned to putting away her golf clubs for the season as she walked off the course Wednesday at the Region 2 Tournament.
The Hopkins County Central sophomore shot 96 – 12 shots higher than her personal best.
But as players came off the immaculate Pearl Club course outside of Owensboro, there weren’t many scores higher than hers. She just had to have one of the 10 lowest scores outside of those posted by region champion Daviess County and runner-up Henderson County to advance to the KHSAA state first round next week.
When the last score was posted, Cotton found herself in a tie with Owensboro’s Ryann Kasey for the final state first-round qualifying spot.
Both golfers had been off the course for more than an hour and had to return to the 18th hole for a playoff.
Cotton reached the par-4 hole in three shots and two-putted for a bogey, securing her spot in the state first round at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club next week.
Cotton and freshman Madolyn Brown represented the Lady Storm on Wednesday. Brown shot a 124.
Breckinridge County’s Adelynn Moorman shot a 5-over par 77 to win the region title by one shot over Daviess County’s Claire Reynolds and University Heights Academy’s Conlee Lindsey.
