Trigg County continued its recent run of good soccer with a 7-1 win over Heritage Christian Academy on Tuesday.

The Wildcats began the season 0-6-1 but have posted a 4-1-2 record over the past 17 days. The four wins equal the total from the past two seasons combined.

On Senior Night, two of Trigg’s three seniors got into the scoring column. Lance Breckel banged home a penalty kick nine minutes into the match.

Slaton Carter cleaned up in front of the net to open Trigg’s second half scoring in the 52nd minute. A third Wildcat senior, Alex Hurt, was injured and did not play.

Trigg’s offense appeared sluggish in the first half as Heritage Christian packed the defense with six defenders back, causing the Wildcats some problems.

Kallan Davis, who missed some time with an injury, tied the match at 1-1 in the 24th minute when he stole a pass and scored his 22nd goal of the season.

Matthew Choate factored in Trigg’s next two goals of the half. He fed James Garnett on a goal with 11 minutes left in the half and scored off a cross from Corben Woodall with six minutes left for a 3-1 Trigg lead at intermission.

Garnett had a goal and an assist in the second half while Izaiah Ruzicka scored a pair of goals.

The game was called with under two minutes left when visible lightning forced a delay and both teams agreed to call the match early.

“We did a better job of moving the ball in the second half. When you move the ball, it makes them have to creep out and then those lanes start opening,” Trigg County coach Kyle Bleidt said “That was a real key for us at halftime, talking about just playing the right way. I think we walked in tonight expecting that we were going to have it easy and that’s never the case.”

Trigg County (4-7-3) will play at Hopkins County Central on Thursday.

For Heritage Christian Academy, Tuesday was the team’s first match in 12 days due to low player numbers.

Despite dropping to 1-9-1, Warriors coach Lloyd Young is seeing improvement in his young squad that has five first-year players as starters.

“When you have players that have never played before and they’re here to help the school, seeing them develop as a team — it’s one of our models,” said Young. “They know they don’t have the numbers so there is pick -me -ups. They’re helping each other play the games or teaching each other how to play the game.”

HCA will host Fort Campbell on Thursday.
