Playing in his first KHSAA State Golf First Round, Madisonville freshman Jake Witherspoon couldn’t maintain a solid start and completed his season with a 53rd-place finish on Wednesday.

Witherspoon began on the back nine at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club and shot a 4-over 40 with three pars and a birdie.

On the front nine, the pars were tougher to come by as the greens firmed up as the day progressed, leading to a 45.

Witherspoon shot a 14-over 85 and missed advancing to next week’s championship round by five shots.

Golfers at state first round need to finish in the top 15 so long as they are not on the three teams with the lowest scores to advance to the two-day championship round.

McCracken County’s Landon Hunt and Greenwood’s Layton Richey tied for the lead with even par 71s while McCracken County, Owensboro, and Taylor County will advance to the championship round next week.
