
Crittenden County was intent on taking away Lyon County’s main scoring threat in Alice Smith and the ploy worked for most of Monday’s match.
However, Lyon County’s all-time leading scorer did what she does best, get behind the defense, and she delivered with four goals to lead the Lady Lyons to a 5-2 win and a rematch with Trigg County in Tuesday’s 5th District championship.
The four goals give her 145 for her career and tie her with Trigg County’s Lania Hite for the most goals in district history. With at least two games left, Smith will try and become the fifth player in Second Region history to score 150 career goals.
The sledding was tough for Smith and the Lady Lyons early against the Lady Rockets, who packed the midfield in an attempt to push Lyon wide with their offense.
In the 32nd minute, Smith was finally able to break through the defense and put home her first goal of the night.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Smith again scored on a breakaway for a 2-0 Lady Lyon lead.
Crittenden County had a pair of chances of tying the match, missing on a breakaway in the final two minutes of the first half and clanking a shot off the post in the 45th minute.
The Lady Rockets got on the board in the 62nd minute when Kaylin Coleman fed Kylie Bloodworth for her 15th goal of the season.
Smith and the Lady Lyons had the answer with a pair of goals in two minutes to push the advantage to 4-1.
Anna White, who assisted on one of Smith’s tallies earlier, scored her 16th goal of the season with seven minutes left.
Ella Geary completed the scoring for Crittenden County when her 21st goal of the season found the net inside the final minute.
Crittenden outshot Lyon County in the second half 10-7 although the Lady Lyons held a 17-14 advantage for the match.
Macibelle Hardesty had 10 saves for the Lady Rockets, while Richmond Herring had six for the Lady Lyons.
Crittenden County, which has no seniors on its roster, ends the 2024 campaign with a 5-11 record.
Lyon County (9-8) will play Trigg County in the district championship match on Tuesday night at the Trigg Rec Complex.
