For the first time Kentucky women’s basketball has sold out of season tickets going into Monday’s season opener against USC Upstate but first-year coach Kenny Brooks is not surprised.
“This is why I came here,” Brooks said Thursday when I asked him about the ticket sales. “We had built the same thing at Virginia Tech. We want this to be the university’s team, not just our team as I constructed it.
“We understand we are playing for something bigger. It’s very productive it (ticket sales) has happened this quickly and that people want to support us.”
Brooks had a feeling ticket sales were going to go well.
“I cannot go anywhere in Lexington without people saying they are excited,” Brooks said. “At Virginia Tech, nobody knew who I was when I first got there. They grew to appreciate it but to come here and tickets are all sold out before we play (our first game) is a testament to our fan base.
“This was the reason I wanted to come here. I felt it was a sleeping giant. We’ve had some success in recruiting battles and are looking forward to making people believe that Kentucky women’s basketball has a product they can enjoy.”
Brooks and his team are enjoying the renovated Historic Memorial Coliseum. Brooks said him, his staff and most of the players don’t “know any different” than the new coliseum because they were not here before the renovations.
“We hear fans talk about the history of the building and the improvements and that they are excited,” the Kentucky coach said. “It has a wonderful vibe. It’s bright and the sound system is amazing. It feels like a mini NBA arena. Get fans in and it will be jumping. It gives you an atmosphere kids want to play in.”
