It’s only the preseason, but Lyon County’s girls may have opened some eyes with a win over defending 4th Region champion Bowling Green on Saturday.
The Lady Lyons got 23 points from Piper Cotham and knocked off last year’s state quarterfinalist 50-42 at the third annual Rise Up Know Her Name Pan-O-Rama at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School.
Lyon led 23-21 at halftime. Bowling Green surged ahead early in the second half before Lyon regained the advantage and led 38-32 through three quarters.
Trinity Taylor added 12 points and 12 rebounds for Lyon while Courtney Collins had 10 points and 10 boards. Lilly Perry had three points and Jenna Coursey two.
NaTaya Wardlow had 11 points to lead Bowling Green while Katy Smiley had 10 points and Emma Macy nine.
The contest was one of five preseason contests in Madisonville on Saturday.
One unique aspect of the event is that all games are played with an Elam Ending. Under that format, teams finish the contest playing to a target score. At the first dead ball with under 3:00 to play, the target score is set at seven points above the leading team’s current point total. The clock is then turned off, and the game continues until one team reaches the target score.
The regular season begins for high school basketball teams around the commonwealth the first week of December.
