The Dawson Springs Panthers used a strong defensive effort in the final quarter to break a 34-34 tie and carry the Panthers to a 52-43 scrimmage win over Carlisle County Saturday at the CFSB Center in Murray. The win gave the Panthers a split of their trip to Murray for the day.
The first quarter saw Dawson Springs jump out to an early 6-0 lead on 3-pointers from Montgomery Johnston and Rex Blue. Carlisle County battled back to take the lead at 11-10. The quarter ended with the Panthers up by one at 18-17.
The Comets hit the Panthers with a quick 6-0 run to open the second, taking a 23-18 lead. Those would be the last points in the quarter for Carlisle County as Dawson Springs went on a 10-0 sprint to go into the half up 28-23.
The third quarter was closely played with the Panthers holding the lead until a late Comet three tied the game up at 34-34 heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers opened the final quarter with a 7-0 run that put them up 41-36 and put the pressure firmly on the Comets. But the Dawson Springs half-court defense would not allow the Carlisle County offense to get anything going down the stretch of the game and the Panthers held on for the nine-point win.
Montgomery Johnston ended up with 20 points. Rex Blue added 15. Jaydon Plunkette had 9 points on three makes from behind the arc. Deacon Dever finished with 8 points.
