Slaton Carter is a mission-oriented person.
The Trigg County High School senior sets his sights on something and goes after it like a detective trying to solve a big case.
One of his missions was to get an offer to play baseball at Campbellsville University. This week, Slaton announced that had become a reality.
Baseball has been his favorite sport for a while. He hit .268 for the Wildcats last year and was among the team leaders with a .717 OPS – on-base percentage plus slugging. He was also second on the team in RBI.
But he also plays three other sports for the Wildcats. He gets ready to begin his senior season on the basketball team with new coach Michael Fraelix.
Slaton was a starter for the boys’ soccer team – one of the few ‘older’ players on a squad that started six freshmen at times. The Wildcats still celebrated a district championship.
“I used to play a little goalie in soccer when I was younger but now it’s just more of something to do,” he said.

Because of his ability to kick, Slaton added a fourth sport this year – football. He had never played but steadily improved throughout the season. He averaged nearly 30 yards a punt but kicked at a 33-yard average over the final four games.
His mission was to improve his kicking and he completed it.
Away from the fields of play, Slaton stays active in the DECA club as vice president. He and his fellow club members have competed at DECA Nationals for the past two years.
“I was in a certain percentile at Nationals for my role plays and in a food marketing series where I had to develop a situation and present myself as a director,” Slaton said.
He also serves as president of the TCHS Student Council and is a Beta Club member.

Slaton plays an important role in helping plan and execute the Fellowship of Christian Athletes ‘See You at the Pole’ service each year.
He was also a member of the Trigg County Youth Leadership Class and Voice of the Wildcats, who met with school administrators as a voice of the students.
Perhaps his biggest role in the community came last year when he and Addi Cabbage were selected to give the community a guided tour of the new multi-million dollar co-curricular building that both have used as TCHS athletes.
“That was amazing,” he said. “It’s great to be able to be involved in so many things and be able to help with our amazing new facilities.”

Over the summer, Slaton participated in the Governor’s Scholars Program which recognizes the best and brightest of the state’s upcoming seniors.
At Campbellsville, Slaton looks to get his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies, obtain a teaching certificate, and come back to Trigg County and teach and possibly coach.
At least, that’s the mission for Slaton which he will most likely accept and complete.
