
A dry spell to start the game put the Hopkins County Central Lady Storm behind and they never got to the lead Saturday afternoon in a 51-41 loss to the Breckinridge County Lady Tigers in the Independence Bank Tip-Off Classic at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
The Lady Storm were held without a field goal for just over four minutes at the beginning of the game. The good news for Hopkins County Central was that their defense was not giving up much on the other end of the court. When the Lady Storm broke the ice, the Breckinridge County lead was 5-2.
Hopkins County Central would get as close as two points in the opening quarter but could not pull even. Breckinridge County held a 13-8 lead after the first eight minutes.
Both offenses continued to have trouble with the others’ defense in the second quarter. Hopkins County Central would get as close as three on three occasions, while Breckinridge County led by as many as seven points. The Lady Tigers led by six points at 25-19 at the half.
The difference in the opening half was at the line. Breckinridge County was 11 of 15 at the line in the half, while Hopkins County Central was 4 of 6.
Sparked by the play of Kylie Carby, Breckinridge County opened the second half with a quick 5-0 spurt to push the lead out to double figures for the first time in the game at 30-19. The Lady Storm came right back with a 5-point spurt of their own to take it back to six points at 30-24.
The lead would reach as many as ten again in the quarter before the Lady Storm trimmed it to 41-34 at the end of the third.
Another 3 minute dry spell for the Lady Storm to open the final quarter allowed Breckinridge County to nudge the lead out to 45-34. And that would turn out to be enough to seal the win for the Lady Tigers.
Hopkins County Central was led by Tyah White with 15 points. Addie Menser added 11 and Calajia Mason finished with 8 points.
For the Lady Tigers, Elizabeth Grimes finished the afternoon with 16 points. Kayleigh Huffines and Adelynn Moorman added 9 points each.
Hopkins County Central (0-2) is back in action Thursday night on the road in a big 7th District contest at Madisonville-North Hopkins.
