Lady Lyons Take Kelly Holiday Classic Title

The Lyon County Lady Lyons will head into 2025 packing a ton of momentum and playing some of the best basketball among girls teams in Western Kentucky. The Lady Lyons won their 9th straight game Sunday evening and took the championship of the 2024 Kelly Holiday Classic with a 60-57 win over the Nelson County Lady Cardinals.

The win was the first for the Lady Lyons over the Lady Cardinals. Nelson County had won the two previous meetings between the schools with a 74-46 win in 2006 and a 62-35 win in 2011.

The game was close throughout with the biggest lead for Lyon County at 7 points and the biggest lead for Nelson County at 3 points.

The Lady Lyons led 16-12 after the first quarter. Nelson County cut the lead to two at the break at 33-31.

Lyon County led 47-44 after the third and fought off the Lady Cardinals down the stretch of the game to take a three-point win and the tournament title.

Courtney Collins was Lyon County’s leading scorer with 18 points, 17 of them coming in the first half. She was also named to the All-Tournament team. Piper Cotham added 13 and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Trinity Taylor finished with 12 and Lilly Perry had 9.

Lyon County ends the December portion of the schedule at 10-1. The Lady Lyons return to action Friday night when they host Muhlenberg County.
