After winning the 2023 White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic, the 2024 version of the tournament has not gone quite as well for the defending state champion Lyon County Lyons. The Lyons dropped their second game in two days Saturday afternoon, falling to Boyd County 92-85 in the consolation bracket of the tournament.

The loss came less than 24 hours after the Lyons dropped a tough 73-67 double overtime to decision to Lexington Catholic in the opening round of the tournament.

This game saw big swings of momentum throughout. Boyd County came out and took a 24-14 lead after one quarter.

The Lyons responded with a big second quarter, putting 29 points on the board and taking a 43-40 lead going into the break.

Both teams were in high offensive gear in the third quarter, combining to score 61 points as Boyd County charged back to take a 72-70 lead going into the final quarter.

The Lions were then able to fend off any 4th quarter comeback from the Lyons to take the 7-point win.

Nolan Coffman led the way for Lyon County with 25 points. Bray Kirk was right behind him with 24. Isaac Defew added 13 while Carson Collins ended up with 12.

Boyd County’s Jason Spurlock was the game’s top scorer with 33 points. Ethan Rardon added 18 points.

The Lyons lost despite shooting 52.9 percent from the field for the night.

The loss drops the Lyons to 5-2 on the season and sets them in the 7th place game of the tournament where they will take on defending 3rd Region champ Butler County. The Bears have lost their first two games in the tournament to North Laurel and Newport.

Lyon County and Butler County will square off Sunday afternoon at 2:30 Eastern.
