
The Lyon County Lady Lyons had this one settled before the first hot dog had two bites gone. Lyon County scored the first 18 points of the game and roared to a 68-24 win over the Dawson Springs Lady Panthers in the opening round of the 2nd Region All A Classic at Dawson Springs.
And it was not just that the Lady Lyons scored the first 18 points, but that they also scored those 18 points in just 2 ½ minutes of the opening quarter. Coach Dawn Cotham pulled the Lady Lyon starters with 5:20 to go in the opening quarter and they would stay on the sidelines until the beginning of the second.
Trinity Taylor and Piper Cotham combined to score 16 points for Lyon County in the first quarter.
The Lyon County defensive pressure overwhelmed the young Lady Panthers as Dawson Springs rarely got a chance to set up their offense during that early onslaught. Baylee Swatzell finally got Dawson Springs on the board with a pair of free throws that made it 18-2.
The first quarter ended with Lyon County up 21-8.
The Lyon County starters returned at the beginning of the second quarter. After sitting for nearly six minutes, it took the Lady Lyons a little bit to get revved back up but when they did they dropped the hammer for good.
Lyon County went on a 14-0 run that moved a 33-12 lead out to 47-12. The lead was 47-15 at the half.
Lyon County’s starting five opened the second half and stayed in just long enough to get the game to the running clock. The Lady Lyon lead was 59-23 at the end of the third.
Reserves saw extensive action to end the game for the Lady Lyons as they finished out the 44-point win.
Piper Cotham was the leading scorer for Lyon County with 21 points. Trinity Taylor added 17. Courtney Collins, Lilly Perry, and Audrey Akridge scored 7 points each.
Dawson Springs got 9 points from Baylee Swatzell, all from the free throw line. Hailey Oldham chipped in 6 points.
Lyon County improves to 12-1 with the win, which was the Lady Lyons 11th straight. They advance on to the All A regional semifinals Thursday night to take on the winner of Caldwell County and Fort Campbell.
Dawson Springs drops to 3-6 with the loss. The Lady Panthers are scheduled to go on the road to McLean County Friday night.
