The Todd County Central Lady Rebels will get the chance to play for their first trip to the All A Classic state tournament since 2009. Jordyn Shemwell hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final 30 seconds to help the Lady Rebels fend off a late-game comeback from Monroe County and take a 54-51 win in the second regional semifinal game Wednesday night in Elkton.
Shemwell was not the only Lady Rebel to make a big play late in the game. Todd County Central was trying to hold on to a one-point lead when Daymea Garrett missed a three out of the left corner with under a minute to go in the game. Chloe Collins came up with the rebound underneath the basket and stuck the putback attempt to put the Lady Rebels up 50-47 with 47 seconds left.
The Lady Falcons drove the ball quickly down the court and Sarah Thompson made a driving shot to the basket and earned a shot at a 3-point play. However, Thompson missed the free throw and the Lady Rebels secured the rebound, setting the stage for Shemwell’s two trips to the free throw line.
It was Thompson who helped Monroe County get off to a good start. She scored 7 points in the first quarter as the Lady Falcons took a 13-12 lead.
Thompson and Carlee Yokely helped Monroe County stay in front during the second quarter. The two combined for 9 points as the Lady Falcons took a 25-22 lead into the break.
Early in the third quarter, Alexis Taylor and Jordyn Shemwell bagged 3-pointers, helping to ignite a Lady Rebel run that saw Todd County Central get to the lead and then push that lead out to double figures. The margin was 10 at the end of the quarter with the Lady Rebels up 42-32.
But the Lady Falcons would not go away quite that easy.
Monroe County fought back and got the game to within five points at 46-41 with 4:50 left to go in the game, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Alexis Taylor, despite facing a junk defense most of the game, led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 23 points. JaMya Kay hit double figures with 11. Jordyn Shemwell, who did not play December 14 when Monroe County steamrolled Todd County Central 64-35, ended up with 9 points and Chloe Collins added 8.
Sarah Thompson led Monroe County with 15 points. Carlee Yokely added 13 points. Ansley Turner reached double figures with 11.
Todd County Central improves to 9-5 with the win, which was the Lady Rebels 4th straight. Todd County Central advances to the 4th Region All A championship game to face Metcalfe County (12-3), who advanced with a 54-34 win over Clinton County.
The last time the Lady Rebels and the Lady Hornets met was in last year’s 4th Region tournament, where Todd County Central won 51-49.
The game is tentatively set for Friday night at 6 but could be moved depending on the forecasted winter storm.
