University Heights Academy and Hopkins County Central combined to put up some big numbers Monday night in Mortons Gap.
But none were bigger than the 50 points and 16 rebounds turned in by UHA junior Tylin George.
George’s big night helped the Blazers pull out a 92-90 victory over the Storm.
But Hopkins Central junior Davonyae Butcher had 36 points of his own and kept the Storm in the game until the closing seconds.
Butcher’s four-point play with 1:14 left in the game knotted the contest at 84-84.
UHA (4-8) went back to George on the other end. Ryan Luckey hit George on a cut down the lane, leading to a layup and a three-point opportunity for George. He converted the free throw to put the Blazers up 87-84 with 56 seconds to play.
Luckey then came up with the defensive play of the game for UHA, getting a steal out front on the other end and coasting in for an uncontested layup to extend the margin to 89-84 with 41 seconds remaining.
Hopkins Central (6-6) got within 90-87 when Sylas Gunn scored in the paint with 7.2 seconds to go.
However, George canned two free throws to make it a five-point game.
The Storm answered with a 3-pointer from the wing by Lake Sumner to trim the gap back to two points.
But only 1.2 seconds remained.
Hopkins Central called a timeout but couldn’t get the steal it needed. Instead, UHA’s inbounds pass was thrown long into front court to George, who dribbled out the time to preserve the University Heights win.
George had 14 2-pointers, four 3-pointers and was 10 of 13 at the free throw line for his 50 points. He scored 34 points in the second half.
Jaiden Daniels also scored in double figures for the Blazers with 13 points. Luckey, Jaden Miles and Frank Pollard each had nine points.
Butcher had six 3-pointers as part of his big night. He had 16 points in the second quarter alone, helping the Storm erase a double-digit deficit.
Hopkins Central put up 35 points in the second period to turn a 22-10 deficit after one quarter into a 45-40 advantage at halftime.
UHA responded by outscoring the Storm 31-21 in the third period to take a 71-66 lead to the final 8 minutes.
Sumner finished with 23 points for the Storm.
UHA will see 8th District action on Thursday when it hosts Hopkinsville.
Hopkins Central is back on the court Tuesday when it visits Heritage Christian Academy in Hopkinsville.
