You could say the Dawson Springs offense came out ready to roll Saturday night. And that might be an understatement. The Panthers put 34 points on the board in the opening quarter and ran their way past Heritage Christian Academy 77-51 on the Warriors home floor.
Led by a sizzling start from Montgomery Johnston, who had missed a couple of games recently, the Panthers bolted out to a 34-7 lead after the opening quarter. Johnston scorched the net for 20 first quarter points.
The Panthers also held the state’s 2nd leading scorer Jason Leek without a point for the first 8 minutes of the game.
Leek got going in the second quarter, scoring all 15 points for the Warriors but the Panthers kept running hot as well. The Dawson Springs lead grew to 57-22 at the break, which meant the second half would be played with a running clock.
Dawson Springs led 68-34 after three and then played the 4th quarter out to the final 26 point margin as Panther reserves took to the court.
Montgomery Johnston finished with 26 points for the Panthers, only six coming after the first quarter. Rex Blue added 22 points. Preston Drennan came off the bench to score 9 points.
Jason Leek ended up with 35 points after being blanked in the first quarter. Noah Arvin and Sam Thompson added 4 points each for the Warriors.
Dawson Springs improves to 9-9 with the win. The Panthers will host Community Christian Friday night.
Heritage Christian goes to 4-12 and they will host Community Christian Tuesday night.
