The schools are separated by just over 300 miles and Friday evening their boys’ basketball teams will meet on the court of the Owensboro Sportscenter in the quarterfinal round of the All A Classic state tournament. The Lyon County Lyons and the Pineville Mountain Lions are set to tip-off at 5pm in the opening game of the evening session.

Pineville comes into the game at 14-5, fresh off a big 75-44 win over Bishop Brossart Thursday in the opening round of the state tournament.

The Mountain Lions are appearing in the All A Classic state tournament for the fifth time. They made back-to-back appearances in 2008 and 2009 and again in 2016 and 2017. Before Thursday’s win over Bishop Brossart, Pineville’s only All A state tournament win was in the opening round in 2009 when they knocked off Calvary Christian.

The Mountain Lions are led by senior guard Sawyer Thompson, who averages 22.1 points per game. Thomson had 19 points and 17 rebounds in the win over Bishop Brossart.

Ashton Moser is Pineville’s other double-digit scorer at 19.1 points per game. He is also the team’s top rebounder at 8.1 rebounds a game.

Cameron Puckett is right on the edge of double-figures scoring at 9.8 points a contest for the Mountain Lions.

Pineville’s 5 losses have come to Breathitt County, Clay County, Briarwood Christian (AL), McCreary Central, and North Laurel.

This will be the first meeting between Lyon County and Pineville.
