The Hopkinsville girls’ swimming team had a repeat champion as part of a fifth-place finish at the Region One Championships on Saturday at the Rick Cohn Aquatic Center.
Grace Cansler repeated as region champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, surging past Murray’s Tatum Faulkner in the closing yards. Cansler’s time of 1:15.23 was .63 seconds better than Faulkner’s and was a repeat of 2024 when Cansler edged Faulkner by .42 seconds to take the region title.
Cansler was also fifth in the 100-yard freestyle earlier in the day in 1:01.97.
The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for the state first round on Feb. 8 at Bowling Green High School. The next ten times in the event from Regions 1-3 will also qualify
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Saralynn Major, Grace Cansler, Kaley Bangart, and Eliza Renshaw finished in third place in 2:03.59.
Kaley Bangart was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:38.18 and was 10th in the 50-yard freestyle in 31.41.
Eliza Renshaw was sixth in the 100-yard fly in 1:24.76 and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 31.23.
Saralynn Major was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:27.49 and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:06.80.
Kaydon Coats was ninth in the 50-yard freestyle in 31.30 and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:09.15.
Evelyn Bangart was ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:44.60 and 15th in the 50-yard freestyle in 33.29.
Madelin Macario was 15th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:46.41 and was 16th in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:19.61.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Kaley Bangart, Eliza Renshaw, Grace Cansler, and Saralynn Major finished in fifth place in 2:17.28.
As a team, Hopkinsville had 197 points. Murray repeated as region champions with 422 points followed by Fort Campbell (261), Henderson County (235), and Madisonville (228).
Meanwhile, seventh grader Lance Zigelhofer was the lone Tiger to compete at the region meet. He finished in 15th place in the 50-yard freestyle in 33.94 and was 20th in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:24.62.
