The Hopkinsville Tigers got off to a decent start against Daviess County but the Panther defense owned the second quarter and that springboarded Daviess County to a 72-40 win Saturday night in the First Commonwealth Mortgage Classic at the Owensboro Sports Center.

The Tigers took a 17-15 lead after the first eight minutes of the game, thanks in large part to a big start from Treston Kay, who scored 8 minutes in the first quarter.

However, the second quarter belonged entirely to the Panthers. Daviess County’s defense shut out Hopkinsville and the Panthers clawed back to take a 33-15 lead into the half.

The Panther offense came out of the break and settled the matter for good in the third quarter. Junior Jonathan Moss torched the nets for 14 points in the quarter as Daviess County ran the lead out to 55-27 heading into the fourth.

The Panthers then rode the game out to the final 32-point margin.

Treston Kay scored 10 points to lead Hopkinsville. Jonathan Hart chipped in with 8 points and Layton Giltner finished with 7.

The Panthers got 20 points from Jonathan Moss, who led all scorers in the game. Right behind him was DeAaron Watkins with 19.

Hopkinsville (8-13) goes across town Monday night to take on Heritage Christian.
