Remember early in the season when All-American guard Georgia Amoore was not scoring at a prolific rate for Kentucky.

At the time, coach Kenny Brooks said not to worry. When the time came that Kentucky needed her to score big, she would.

That time came Sunday at Oklahoma when Amoore poured in 43 points to tie the school record and led No. 12 Kentucky to a 95-86 win over No. 13 Oklahoma. Amoore was 15 of 22 from the field, including 7-for-12 from 3-point range, and 6-for-8 at the foul line.

No matter what Oklahoma tried, Amoore had the answer to tie the school record set by Jennifer O’Neil in 2013 and tied by Rhyne Howard on Jan. 9, 2020. No Kentucky player had scored 40 points in a game in the last five years since Howard’s 43 points.

“It’s unreal. It’s a huge honor,” Amoore said after the win. “It sounds cliche, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. We kept moving the ball and punishing their defense.”

Amoore also had eight assists and drew seven fouls. She also had only two turnovers in 39 minutes of play.

“Georgia was terrific. Not only with points, but controlling the game,” Brooks said. “That is extreme company she’s in. She had it in shootaround. She really picked them apart. I’ve watched her play a lot, that’s the best game I’ve ever seen her play.”

It’s hard to dispute Brooks’ reasoning based on these numbers:

— She becomes just the fifth player in Division I this season to score as many as 43 points, and the second in the SEC. Her previous career high was 39.

—  She had 20 points at halftime, the first UK player to have at least 20 points in the first half since Rhyne Howard had 24 against Auburn on Feb. 27, 2022.

— She has scored 20 or more points in 11 games this season, including five of nine league games. She has scored 10 or more points in 20 games this season.

— It was the third game this season she has made at least seven 3-pointers and she became the first player in program history to have three games with at least seven 3-pointers in the same season.

—  She has recorded at least eight assists in 14 games this season and had her 13th game of the season with at least 15 points and five assists.

Kentucky had to overcome two fouls by center Clara Strack in the first five minutes that sidelined her for the rest of the first half. Backup Clara Silva had four fouls in the first half and both Teonni Key and Amelia Hassett were in foul trouble. Strack, Silva and Key all fouled out

“I’ve taken a team to a Final Four, but I can’t be more proud of a group than I am of this group,” Brooks said.

Strack finished with 19 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists in 26 minutes. Guard Dazia Lawrence went 5-for-11 from the field and had 14 points, four assists and two steals. Silva provided eight points on 3-for-4 shooting. Hassett were limited to a combined seven points but both had six rebounds. Silva, Hassett and Strack all blocked two shots.

“Clara Strack came in the second half and was unbelievable. It was a collective effort. Very proud of our kids,” Brooks said.

Kentucky is now 19-2 overall and 8-1 in SEC play. The Cats are off until Feb. 10 when they play at Ole Miss and then return home to host Texas Feb. 13.

  1. Wow…what a very big signature win and to do it on opponents floor. Who would have guessed we would have won by this margin by only having 3 in double figs while Ok had 5 and also outboarded us by about about 15. Wish the men played with as much commitment as the gals do!

  2. All the Lady Cats can hit 3’s. Brooks runs a great offense to get them open. On the pick and roll a lot of times Strack will fake diving to the basket and back out to the free throw line. She hits that shot 90% of the time. I still think Pope could get some good ideas from Brooks. Go Lady Cats!

  3. Brooks has done a tremendous job of quickly restoring UK WBB to a winning program. It’s nice to have any UK program shining & BB is extra special.

When the men’s UK BB becomes consistent playing TEAM 1st Ball, which Coach Ole & his excellent staff developed instantly for a 7-0 start, then the wins will come more frequently. The A:TO ratio tells the tale as to when players are truly playing FOR THE TEAM FIRST.

Congrats to Coach Brooks, the awesome guard and the entire team!!!
