In most high school basketball games, points off turnovers are a direct correlation to the success of a team and the outcome of a game.

That held true on Friday as Hopkinsville scored 40 points off 33 Trigg County turnovers and rolled to an 89-52 win over the Wildcats in Cadiz.

Hopkinsville turned up the heat early, forcing 11 first quarter turnovers that resulted in 14 points. Trigg County scored the first five points of the game, only to see Hopkinsville respond with a 13-2 run.

Trigg County got as close as nine points midway through the second quarter on a three-pointer by Caleb Fogle. However, the Tigers ended the first half on an 18-5 run capped by a Jonathan Hart putback ahead of the halftime horn that gave the Tigers a 44-24 lead at the break.

Trigg County would get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Hopkinsville recorded 18 steals from Trigg’s 33 turnovers and outscored the Wildcats 58-18 in the paint.

Hoptown was able to pull away by shooting 60 percent (20 of 33) in the second half. Five players scored in double figures for Hoptown led by James Bradley’s 23 points. He was 11 of 14 from the field and had three steals.

Layton Giltner added 14 points in six rebounds and freshman Jonavon Leavell scored 13 points.

Fogle led Trigg County with 21 points and was five of eight behind the arc. Davaree Gude joined him in double figures with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Hopkinsville’s win was its 16th straight in the series dating back 19 years and leads the all-time series with Trigg 65-24.

Hopkinsville has won two straight and four of its last five games. The Tigers will play at Hopkins County Central on Saturday night.

Trigg County is going in the other direction. They have lost a season-high six straight games and will try and get back on the winning track when they host Caldwell County on Monday.
