There’s a good chance Lyon County and Madisonville-North Hopkins could meet later this season in the 2nd Region tournament.

In a preview of regional contenders Thursday night at Jason White Gymnasium in Eddyville, the Lyons turned back a late comeback bid by the Maroons to claim an 89-71 triumph.

Bray Kirk had 27 points for Lyon (19-6), which built an 18-point lead in the first half.

Down 36-18, Maidsonville (13-11) got back to within 45-36 at halftime.

The Maroons then stalemated the Lyons in the third quarter, trailing 61-52 entering the final frame.

A three-point play by Kanyon Johnson helped Madisonville close to within 65-61 with still 6:05 left in the contest — and seeminly put the momentum squarely on the Maroons’ side.

However, Lyon got a 3-pointer from Nolan Coffman at the other end, and went on to push the lead to double figures with 3 minutes to play.

The Lyons stretched the final margin out to 18 points at 89-71 — equaling the largest lead of the night.

Coffman finished with 22 points for Lyon while Carson Collins had 18 and Cooper Collins tallied 12 points.

Landen Smith topped the Madisonville scoresheet with 22 points. Johnson had 18 points and Ryan Bryant had 14.

Lyon has taken its last six matchups with the Maroons.

If the two teams were to meet again in the regional tourney, that game would on Madisonville’s home court.

The Lyons will go for their 20th win when they play at home again on Friday against Murray High School.

Madisonville next travels to Caverna on Saturday.
